    Terra Del Capo

The Terra del Capo range was born of a passion. The late Anthonij Rupert quite literally willed it into being one Sunday afternoon, having established a firm love of Italian varietals and their proclivity for Cape terroir. He brought the first Pinot Grigio plant material into the country in the early 80s, cementing what was to become a lifelong obsession with Pinot Gris.

The London Wine And Spirits Exhibition

During the 1980s Winemakers from South Africa would travel annually to London for the “London Wine and Spirits Exhibition.” The winemaker at L’Ormarins at the time recalls that Anthonij would order a different bottle of Pinot gris each evening with his dinner. All these were from different regions from all over the world. He loved the simplicity of the wines and would regularly comment on the mouthfeel, but insisted that L’Ormarins could produce a better Pinot gris.

    1985

The First L’Ormarins Pinot Gris Is Produced

Anthonij Rupert produces his first Pinot Gris, under the L’Ormarins label. It was an Estate wine and made in the same style as the Terra del Capo Pinot Grigio of today. Picked at between 23°-24°Balling with about 3.2g/l the style was made with a low acidity and a full mouthfeel, which enabled it to pair beautifully with food or to be enjoyed on its own. The wine was launched at the Cape Sun in Cape Town.

On Sunday afternoon at this home on L’Ormarins, Anthonij came up with the idea to create a range of Italian varieties and to call it Terra del Capo, meaning “Soils of the Cape”. The first rough draft of the label was designed on the same afternoon.
