    Arné

    Terra Del Capo Arne NV

    Arné 2020

The palate is at first restrained before revealing juicy red plums and ripe cherries brushed with peppery spice. Layers of fruit are intertwined with cedar and oak tannin, which is well integrated and poised. The wine appears light, but with time, it gradually reveals its refined depths. Rewardingly long aftertaste.

    Arné 2019

An alluring, complex nose of herbs and cocoa powder over dark berry fruit and a gentle whiff of floral violets. The wine is equally appealing in the mouth. Bright purple, soft berry fruit – nicely ripe and succulent with rich fruitcake flavour and a reminder of that violet nuance. Velvety smooth and rounded in texture, the palate is sleek, suave and serious. Well knit oak frames the fruit and provides backbone and structure to conclude in a the long rich finish.

    Arné 2018

Spicy red cherry and fruitcake aromas, with a brush of tobacco leaf and a gentle hint of floral overlay. Tempting and subtle. Abundant cherry and plum fruit flavours are tempered by a well-judged, Italianate, dry tannin grip. That grip is balanced by the ripeness of the fruit and a genuine succulence, which characterizes this wine. Textured and plush there is a distinct backbone of spicy oak that frames the mouthful beautifully. Lovely fruitcake, cedar and spice can be found on the layered, nuanced palate. Superb length of flavour that lingers.

    Arné 2017

Red fruit, Christmas cake, spice – nutty, lip-smacking succulence on entry, with lingering juicy red fruit and nutty spice and integrated oak on the palate. Lovely pliable lithe but well-structured body. A Supple and succulent wine with a genteel and long finish.

    Vintage Notes

Good winter conditions layed the foundation for a good harvest, which yielded a larger crop than the previous year. The soils were well supplemented because of increased winter rainfall. This allowed for post-harvest irrigation and healthier vines. Moderate summer temperatures during ripening contributed to good flavor retention in the fruit. 2020 promises a full-bodied wine with concentrated flavor profiles.

    Winemaking

Arnè is a co-fermented blend between Sangiovese and Merlot grapes. Instead of blending the two components at the end of fermentation, co-fermentation helps to bring these two cultivars perfectly together in harmony. Each contributes a distinct characteristic to the final wine. The wine fermented dry on the skins before being pressed. Malolactic fermentation was completed in stainless steel tanks before being matured for 10 months in 225l French oak barrels.

    Vintage Notes

Even with a moderate to good rainfall, many vines where still struggling to recover from the drought the Western Cape has experienced over the past 3-4 years. Crop size hit a record low. Good quality wines can be expected from this vintage despite the lower yields and some uneven ripening. Smaller berries contributed to a good concentration of flavours and an ideal balance between acidity and sugar.

Despite challenging conditions with this harvest as a result of the prolonged drought in South Africa the resulting comparatively smaller crop is showing excellent quality.

    Vintage Notes

The harvest was slightly higher in volume than initially expected. This was the second consecutive dry and hot year, but cooler nights during the growing season and the absence of heatwaves during harvest time, helped to buffer the effect of the drought. The upside of these dry weather conditions is that the vineyards are healthier with smaller berries providing good colour and a flavour concentration.
